I always knew I was different, but no one warned me just how much that difference would test me 🌪️. On the outside, I might look like anyone else, but behind my eyes lies a story that very few have heard. Every glance, every whisper, every small curiosity felt like a challenge I had to overcome 💥.
Childhood wasn’t easy. Some days were full of laughter and support, but others… I quickly learned that the world can be unpredictable and full of surprises 😶. I found strength in places I never expected — in quiet moments and unexpected encounters. Every step forward became a small victory I could hold close to my heart 💪.
There were moments that changed everything in my life, things I never anticipated, but they shaped how the world saw me and how I saw myself 🌟. They opened doors I didn’t even know existed — new opportunities, recognition, and a platform to share an important message.
I went through many surgeries, faced unknown steps, and had to accept that life is never exactly the same. But the most important thing is that this journey isn’t over yet… What happened next, and how I am today, I promise you will find fascinating 😶😶.

When I was just five years old, my life changed in ways I could never have imagined 😮. I was playing in the garden when I tripped and got a small bump on my head that didn’t go away. My parents, concerned and confused, took me to countless doctors until I finally heard the word that would shape my life forever: neurofibromatosis type 1 🧬. I didn’t understand it at the time, but I could feel that something about me was different, something that would make my journey unlike anyone else’s.
I have a twin brother, Neil, who shares the same condition, but for him, it appears in a much milder way. While my face developed visible tumors over the years, his looked almost ordinary 😌. From a young age, I became aware of how people reacted to what they saw. Some were curious, others stared or whispered, and some were unkind. School was particularly challenging. Children can be cruel without meaning to be, and I quickly learned that I had to protect not only myself but also my confidence 💪.

It wasn’t easy, but I decided early on that I wouldn’t let someone else’s ignorance define my worth. Each glance or remark became a small test of patience and courage. Over time, I began to see my differences not as limitations, but as part of my story. Each bump and mark on my face represented moments of growth, strength, and resilience 🌟.
Over the years, I underwent dozens of surgeries. Some were minor, others were complex and demanding. Each taught me valuable lessons about patience, self-love, and empathy 🏥. I learned to appreciate my body for what it could endure, not just how it looked. I realized that while my appearance would always be different, my spirit could remain unbroken. People often asked how I coped with the surgeries and the recovery, and I started saying, “I don’t just survive, I thrive” 💖. That phrase became a personal mantra that carried me through difficult times and moments of doubt.
Acting came into my life almost by accident. While working behind the scenes in television, I received an unexpected opportunity to appear in a film alongside Scarlett Johansson in Under the Skin 🎬. That role gave me a platform I never imagined. Suddenly, people around the world were seeing someone like me on screen. They weren’t just noticing my differences—they were listening to my story, and that was life-changing 🌍.

Since then, I have used my visibility to make a difference. I’ve appeared on television programs, given interviews, spoken at conferences, and shared my experiences with audiences of all ages 🗣️. Each time I speak, I aim to show that being different is not a weakness but a unique strength. People often tell me that my story inspires them to face their own challenges, and that motivates me to keep sharing my journey 💫.
One of the most memorable experiences in recent years was being cast to play Joseph Merrick in a new adaptation of The Elephant Man. For me, it was both personal and symbolic. Finally, a disabled actor could represent a character whose story has fascinated and inspired audiences for over a century. Preparing for that role reminded me of how far I had come and how important representation truly is 💎.
I also think a lot about the future, imagining myself as a parent someday 👶❤️. I want my children, whether they share my condition or not, to grow up knowing they are loved unconditionally, supported in every challenge, and encouraged to embrace what makes them unique. I want them to understand that true value comes from courage, kindness, and integrity, not conformity.

Even everyday experiences have shaped me. Walking through a city street can become a small adventure in resilience. I remember one day a little girl came up to me and said, “You are our hero” 😲. Her admiration reminded me that the impact of what we do reaches far beyond our own lives. Our actions, our words, and even our presence can inspire hope and confidence in ways we never imagine.
I have been involved in advocacy work as well, supporting organizations that promote face equality and challenge societal stereotypes. I aim to create a space where people can share their stories, find encouragement, and embrace their differences 🏛️✨. It’s about making the world more inclusive, showing that representation matters, and that no one should feel defined by how they look.
Reflecting on my journey, I see one undeniable truth: challenges and differences can become incredible sources of strength if we face them with courage and determination 😌. I have chosen to be visible, authentic, and proud of who I am, knowing that my story may give someone else the confidence to face their own struggles.

Now, standing on stage during my first TED talk, with thousands of faces in front of me, I feel an energy I’ve never experienced before 🌈. Sharing my story and seeing people inspired by it is more powerful than I could have ever imagined 💥. Every reaction, every nod, every tear or smile is a reminder that what we share can change lives.
I have learned that real beauty comes not from perfection, but from embracing who we are, facing life with courage, and using our voices to lift others ✨💖. My journey started with a small bump on my head, but it has grown into a story of hope, resilience, and inspiration for people all over the world 🎉🌟.
And I know this is just the beginning. There are more challenges to face, more stories to tell, and more people to inspire. My life may have started with uncertainty, but it has become a testament to the power of persistence, self-belief, and the courage to be different 💎.
